No list of abbreviations makes cross references in the book useless. The book is strangely disorganized, with no morning/evening prayers, but rather a selection thrown together under topical headers like "Easter", "Advent" etc. The Sanctorale takes|About the Author|Douglas Dales is the author of several books on Anglo-Saxon spirituality. He is Chaplain and Head of Religious Studies at Marlborough College in Wiltshire as well as a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

This anthology of Anglo-Saxon prayer and spiritual writing, much of which has never been translated, makes accessible a rich treasury of Christian theology that was developed in England over a period of 400 years. Dales has set the various kinds of spiritual writings within the framework of prayers that were used at the time. Approx. 20 full-color, museum-quality illustrations.
